Feng Shui

You might not think about it often, but Feng Shui is a major part of our lives. Even in the book Spidersilk, we are shown aspects of Feng Shui without even noticing it. Mark is quite keen on how his possessions and overall home appearance is presented to the world, which is why he spends a good period of time arranging his furnishings and finding furniture that worked with his home. In fact, at one point he gazes out into his backyard and feels that his yard has changed because he senses the change in the environments chi. This is because Feng Shui is an environmental energy that we all feel without realizing it. From the placement of plants in a garden or furniture in a room you can feel at peace or uncomfortable. Mark was in tune with his home's Feng Shui which is part of the reason he was able to know when something wasn't quite right with his furnishings, home and in general, his safety. Tuning in to this special environmental energy allowed him a great advantage when it came to taking on his enemies.

“Yeah, it’s a Web hosting service, a cheap one too . . . matching the Web site. They don’t even design their own Web site, much less host and manage their own Web site. All that Internet technology too complicated for them?” They all laughed at that, and Mark continued, “Hyperspace probably messing with their bat senses.”- Mark in Spidersilk

Maybe it's the eighth leg...

In the book Spidersilk, there were a lot of elements that worked together to help Mark successfully take down his enemies and restore his amazing quality of life. One of the biggest contributions to this was the Spiders that were protecting Mark. Most of us have a fear of spiders because they can be deadly, but are also mysterious and hard to predict. However, in many different cultures the Spider was seen as a protector. Many Native American tribes used to pass down stories of the wisdom the Spider protected to the point that the Spider was often referred to as a grandmother. Islam also presents the spider as a protector who helps weave strength into life. Protection from Mark's enemies was not the only thing the Spiders may have helped Mark with. In fact, his prosperity in finances and friendships might have been because of these mysterious eight legged creatures.

In dreams I walk with you....

Some of Mark's friends and acquaintances joined his life via dreams. Although this might not seem realistic, there are actually many theories in which people can meet and interact with one another. This theory is often referred to as mutual dreaming or mutual telepathy. Numerous lucid dreamers have claimed to have experienced these dreams with many people they know and some they do not yet know. In Spidersilk, we are first introduced to Garrick in a dream in which he helps Mark fight off an enemy. Later on, Mark finally meets him in reality and the two act as old friends. Another case is Tia/Mairis. Tia was a major part of Mark's dreams and when Mairis comes into his life he begins to notice they are the same person. Mairis even subtly comments that she likes Mark's dreams in one area of the book.

Dreaming the future, or remembering the past?

The novel Spidersilk brings readers into a world that is rich in dreams and other dimensions. Although in reality we don't have a lot of experience about alternative dimensions we do have a lot of experience with dreams. There is one moment in the book where Mark finds a dirt road that he has clearly seen before in his dreams. The idea of it being real isn't surprising to Mark, but it certainly seems to tickle his curiosity. This concept, generally referred to as deja vu affects a large percentage of the population. Over the centuries there have been a lot of studies on the topic of deja vu and many have actually led to the theory of precognitive dreams. This theory supports a lot of deja vu moments many people have, including the moment Mark had. Of course, precognitive dreams have also proved to come true in many famous situations like the Titanic.
